Fund a whole well

Most wells here are paid for by a lot of people giving a little. Some are paid for by one person, one family, or one masjid covering the full cost in a single gift. If that is what you want to do, enter the well's full amount at checkout and it finishes that well outright.

How a well gets built

1

You give any amount

There is no minimum. Gifts are pooled, so a well is funded by many people rather than one.

2

It goes to the current well

Every donation is applied to the well that is open for funding, in order. Nothing sits unassigned.

3

We drill and hand it over

Once a well reaches its goal it moves into construction, then to the community that will run it.

4

You can check on it

Each well keeps its own page with progress updates, so you can see where your gift ended up.

How we account for it

Every well shows its own numbers

The cost, the amount raised, and what is left are on this page for all of them, updated as donations come in. Nothing is averaged and nothing is rounded to look better.

Donations are applied in order

Gifts go to the well that is open for funding, one well at a time. If a gift is larger than what that well still needs, the remainder starts the next one, and the checkout shows you that split before you confirm.

A receipt for every donation

Emailed when you give and kept in your account, with the well it went to named on it. Second Nile is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

A well is only completed when it is finished

Wells stay marked as being built until they are handed over to the community that will run them.

Questions people ask

Can I choose which well my donation funds?

Donations go to the well that is currently open for funding, which is the one shown at the top of this page. Funding wells one at a time is what stops five half-finished projects sitting at 60 percent, and it means every gift moves something that is actually about to be built.

What happens if my gift is more than the well still needs?

The remainder opens the next well rather than sitting unallocated. The donation form shows you the split before you confirm.

Why does a well cost this much?

The figure on each well is its full cost: survey, drilling, the pump, and handover to the community that will maintain it. It is set per well rather than averaged, so a harder site shows a higher number.

How do I know the well was actually built?

Each well has its own page, and updates are posted to it as the work happens. A well is only marked completed once it is handed over.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Second Nile is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so donations from US taxpayers are tax deductible. A receipt is emailed for every donation and stays in your account.

Can I give monthly instead?

Yes. A monthly gift is applied the same way, to whichever well is open when it is charged, and you can change or stop it yourself from your account at any time.

There is a well waiting on funding right now.

Any amount goes straight to it, once or every month. You will get a receipt, and a page you can come back to and watch it get built.
